“NAM’s previous decisions lacked executive guarantee, but we hope that Tehran summit will be a turning point to provide executive guarantee for [the movement’s] decisions,” Rahim Zare’ told IRNA on Tuesday.
He mentioned fighting racism, colonialism, and imperialism, opposing sanctions and bullying measures, and following an independent policy based on peaceful coexistence as the main fortes of NAM.
Zare’ emphasized that Tehran summit will be an opportunity to inform NAM member states that West’ hostile measures against Iran are not due to its nuclear energy program, but they fear an Islamic Iran.
“Since high-ranking delegations and officials from different countries will take part in NAM summit [in Tehran], it will prove Iran’s power and stability and give crushing response to West’s claims about isolation of Iran,” the Iranian legislator pointed out.
The 16th summit of the NAM member states will be held in Tehran on August 26-31, during which Iran will assume the rotating presidency of the movement for three years.
NAM, an international organization with 120 member states and 21 observer countries, is considered as not formally aligned with or against any major power bloc.
The organization was founded in the former Yugoslavia in 1961 and its members account for about two-thirds of the UN member states as well as 55% of the world population.
NAM’s purpose, as stated in the Havana Declaration of 1979, is to ensure “the national independence, sovereignty, territorial integrity and security of non-aligned countries.”
