Teen drivers risk lives by texting

Two new studies presented at the annual meeting of the Pediatric Academic Societies in Boston warn compulsive mobile phone users especially teenagers.

Researchers say texting while driving and even thinking about it can cause deadly accidents.

The first trial was conducted by Oklahoma high school students who are taking part in a community effort to stop teen drivers and families from texting while driving.

During the test, 30 participants between the ages of 15 and 19 used driving simulators in one of three conditions including driving without a cell phone; texting in a position that forced them to look downward; and texting in a position of their choice.

Regardless of any position the drivers took, those who were texting were up to eight times more likely to drift between lanes. They were also twice as likely to face a near crash with other cars and pedestrians.

“These data demonstrate that there is no ‘safe’ or ‘better’ position that makes texting less dangerous,” concluded Glade Inhofe, a high school student who helped conduct the research.

Jennifer M. Whitehill of the University of Washington who carried out the other study with her colleagues said even “thinking about future cell phone calls and messages may be an additional source of distraction that could contribute to crashes.”

The study which involved 384 undergraduate students focused on compulsive cell phone users and those who were emotionally attached to the phone and thought about it even when it was off or not in use.

“The folks who scored higher on compulsive cell phone use had more prior crashes,” said Whitehill. “If we had a group of 100 students with the lowest scores on the (compulsive scale), we would expect that 25 had a crash in the last year.”

“Among 100 students with the highest scores, we would see 38 crashes. That’s an extra 13 crashes per 100 students within the high-risk group.”
