A teenager has died after being thrown from his wheelchair when the van he was travelling in stopped suddenly, police say.
The 16-year-old boy from Western Australia was travelling to Sydney in a wheelchair-equipped van driven by his mother, went she braked on Shaw Street, Wagga Wagga, on Christmas Day, police said.
“He was in his wheelchair, which was secured in the back of the van,” Wagga Wagga duty officer Inspector Paul Huxtable said.
“He fell forward.”
The boy was taken to Wagga Wagga Base Hospital suffering a fractured leg.
He later died in hospital.
Police were awaiting the results of an autopsy to reveal the cause of death.
Wagga Wagga police continued to investigate and will prepare a report for the coroner.
NSW Police released details of the teenager’s death today because it was added to the Christmas holiday road toll, which stood at 11.
