Tears in court over baby Joshua

People in a packed courtroom have choked back tears as a mother and father read a heart-rending tribute to their month-old baby who died at Sydney Children’s Hospital.

Joshua Elliott died on September 9, 2009, after a catheter perforated one of his veins and leaked nutritional fluid into his chest.

He had been born one month earlier with an intestinal defect and had battled to put on weight.

Joshua’s doctors, his relatives and lawyers at the inquest into his death all fought back tears as his parents, Rebecca and Nathan, spoke about their son.

“The day he died was the worst day of my life,” Ms Elliott told Glebe Coroner’s Court on Friday.

“He stole a big piece of my heart the day he was born, and he took that piece with me when he died.” Ms Elliott said as she described how she visited Joshua in hospital every moment she could.

“After a few days I was allowed to pick him up and it was magical,” she continued.

“He very quickly decided his favourite place was on my chest.”

Ms Elliott said she looked at a picture of Joshua every night before going to bed, and every week the family visited the cemetery where he is buried.

“Josh was a very charismatic little guy,” his father added.

“Everybody who met him, loved him. He got plenty of attention from the nurses.”

A short video of Joshua was also played to the court.

Mr and Ms Elliott praised Sydney Children’s Hospital staff for being open and honest with them after Joshua’s death.

But they said they had still needed answers about the circumstances.

The inquest, before Deputy State Coroner Scott Mitchell, has heard evidence that doctors used a slightly smaller and stiffer catheter in Joshua’s body than they preferred, because the ideal size could not be found.

The preferred catheter was in fact available, but it could not be found because of incorrect labelling.

Mr Mitchell is expected to make several recommendations to Sydney Children’s Hospital about the storage and labelling of catheters.

He paid his own tribute to Joshua, saying, “He was a beautiful boy. He really was.”
