Up to 90,000 homes in Hobart, Launceston, Burnie and Devonport will be connected in the next phase of the National Broadband Network (NBN).
Prime Minister Julia Gillard announced a third phase of the NBN rollout in Hobart on Monday.
Three towns in separate corners of Tasmania were the first to be connected to the $36-billion high-speed broadband network last year, and construction was under way at a further 11 sites.
Ms Gillard said the third stage would begin later this year, with peak construction to occur in 2015.
“It’s Tassie that’s been showing the mainland what you can do with the National Broadband Network,” she told reporters.
“Phase one is being rolled out, phase two is being rolled out … and I can announce that phase three is starting.”
Up to 800 jobs will be created during construction, Ms Gillard says.
The prime minister is in southern Tasmania for a community cabinet meeting at Kingston High School on Monday evening.
