Thousands of shoppers headed to Target to shop last holiday season. Some made purchases at Target; others pulled out their smartphones, scanned product barcodes and made purchases online instead.
To prevent that practice, commonly known as “showrooming,” Target has pledged to match prices with select online retailers — including Amazon.com, Walmart.com, Best Buy.com, Toysrus.com, Babiesrus.com and Target.com — between Nov. 1 and Dec. 16, the company said on Tuesday, though it did not offer any specifics about how the program will work.
Best Buy has likewise promised to match prices with online competitors.
In addition to price matching, Target is also tagging best-selling toys with QR codes. Shoppers can scan the codes to discreetly purchase the toys online — convenient for parents who want to surprise the children accompanying them at the store.
