The court case against South Australian Greens MP Tammy Franks over her alleged failure to lodge tax returns for a decade has been adjourned until August.
The hearing began in the Adelaide Magistrates Court on Wednesday after lengthy legal argument and will now resume on August 31.
Ms Franks has pleaded not guilty to 10 counts of failing to lodge returns between 2001 and 2010.
In a statement, the upper house MP said the Australian Taxation Office (ATO) had acknowledged during the court proceedings that, having since lodged the returns, she could now expect a refund.
“This case is not about non-payment of taxes, nor any attempt to avoid or minimise my taxation obligations,” she said.
“The case centres on an inability to comply within a set, six-week timeframe with an ATO notice.”
Ms Franks said she was not in a position to comply with the notice at that time.
“Given my since publicly documented personal difficulties at the time, including Family Court proceedings now resolved, I am hopeful for a speedy resolution to this case when it comes back to court in August,” she said.
