Speaking to reporters on Wednesday at its headquarters in New York, UN spokesperson Martin Nasirki underlined that the secretary general remains convinced that the only way to resolve the differences between the two sides would be through talks, noting that Ban hopes both parties would reach a final agreement on remaining issues.
Members of the P5+1 reportedly remain divided in their efforts to come up with a response to the comprehensive package Iran offered during its ongoing negotiations with the group in Baghdad.
The P5+1, comprised of the five permanent members of the UN Security Council — Britain, China, France, Russia, and the United States — plus Germany, are holding talks with the Iranian delegation in the Iraqi capital on Tehran’s future cooperation with the group.
Tehran presented its package on Wednesday in the first session of the talks.
The secretary of Iran’s Supreme National Security Council, Saeed Jalili, held a meeting on Wednesday with the EU Foreign Policy chief, Catherine Ashton, who heads the P5+1 representatives.
Sources close to the Iranian delegation state that the Iranian team has also held separate bilateral talks with the Chinese delegation as more talks with the P5+1 group are underway.
