‘Talks of Greek eurozone exit, nonsense’

“I don’t envisage, not even for one second, Greece leaving the euro area. This is nonsense; this is propaganda,” chairman of the euro zone finance ministers, Jean-Claude Juncker, said.

“But the Greek public, the Greek citizens, have to know that we agreed on a program and this program has to be implemented,” he added.

But, Juncker who also serves as Luxembourg’s prime minister promised to adopt softer measures in the event the troubled country manages to form a government that respects bailout agreements.

Athens has reached a deadlock over the formation of a coalition government eight days after holding elections, with Radical Left party SYRIZA, refusing to join any coalition that would go on with harsh austerity measures.

Meanwhile, the moderate Democratic Left party (DIMAR) says no unity government can be formed without the SYRIZA party, which came second in the parliamentary elections.

Greece is forced to hold new elections next month if it does not succeed in resolving the political impasse by Thursday. Polls suggest new elections could usher in a government that turns its back on Greece’s bailout.

Greeks are angry at two years of harsh austerity measures imposed in return for bailouts from the International Monetary Fund and the European Union.
