‘Talks best solution to Syria crisis’

During a meeting with head of the UN mission in Syria, General Robert Mood, on Wednesday, Mohammad Reza Raouf-Sheibani said that negotiations between the Syrian government and its opponents would bring an end to the country’s violence.

He underlined the futility of a military action against Syria, stressing that such a bid would only complicate the situation on the ground and spread the crisis to other parts of the Middle East.

The Iranian envoy also called for an end to foreign diplomatic and financial support for the armed gangs in Syria.

Mood, for his part, pointed to Iran’s key, effective and constructive role in regional developments, stressing the need for the involvement of Iran in the Syria Contact Group meeting, which is due to be held in Geneva, Switzerland on June 30.

Russia has frequently emphasized the importance of Iran’s presence in the meeting.

Britain, France and the United States have, however, expressed opposition to Iran’s involvement in the initiative on Syrian crisis.

On June 22, Joint UN and Arab League Special Envoy for Syria Kofi Annan said Iran should be part of the solution to the crisis in Syria.

Meanwhile, Arab League deputy secretary general Ahmed Bin Hilli underscored the need for Iran participating in the international conference on Syria, saying, “In my view, all the players taking part in the Syrian crisis must be part of this contact group.”

Since mid-March 2011, Syria has been experiencing unrest.

While the West and the Syrian opposition accuse the government of the killings, Damascus blames ”outlaws, saboteurs and armed terrorist groups” for the unrest, insisting that it is being orchestrated from abroad.
