Taliban militants kill 9 Afghan police

Local CID chief Gulab Khan told Press TV that the incident took place late Tuesday after militants broke into the police outpost and opened fire on nine officers, killing all of them.

The police official said 10 officers were stationed at the outpost and that he believed one of them led the militants into the compound while the other nine were sleeping. The assailants then opened fire and killed them.

The 10th officer has disappeared following the deadly attack, Gulab Khan said.

Taliban’s spokesman, Yusuf Ahmadi, claimed responsibility for the attack, adding that 10 police officers were killed in the assault.

The incident came in the wake of recent violent clashes in several provinces of the war-ravaged country over Qur’an burning by the US-led forces, which left over 30 people dead, including six American soldiers, two of them senior US military advisors, and around 180 others injured.

On Monday, the Afghan army chief of staff General Sher Mohammad Karimi said the Qur’an burning was another US-led blunder in Afghanistan.

General Karimi said the US move advanced the Taliban cause and any repeat of such “negligence” by Western forces would be disastrous.

The US-led invasion of Afghanistan took place in 2001. The offensive removed the Taliban from power, but insecurity continues to rise across Afghanistan despite the presence of tens of thousands of US-led troops in the battle-weary country.

Thousands of civilians, including women and children, and many Afghan forces have been killed as a result of the war.
