‘Taliban attacks highlight NATO failure’

“The terrorists’ infiltration in Kabul and other provinces is an intelligence failure for us and especially for NATO and should be seriously investigated,” Karzai said on Monday, a day after the militants carried out what they call ‘the start of their spring offensive’.

Afghan forces gained control of the capital Kabul after 18 hours of clashes on its diplomatic enclave, as well as several southern and eastern cities, AFP reported.

On Sunday, the Taliban launched a series of coordinated attacks on embassies, government buildings, and US-led military bases in Kabul and three eastern cities.

The Taliban say the attacks were a response to recent claims by US-led forces that the militants had weakened.

In the exchange of fire, 36 militants, 11 security forces, and four civilians were reportedly killed.

The US, British, and German embassies, NATO’s headquarters, and the Afghan parliament were targeted.

All foreign embassies and governmental buildings were on lockdown during the attacks.

Rockets were also fired at the Russian Embassy in another part of the city.

Despite the presence of tens of thousands of US-led forces in Afghanistan, insecurity continues to rise across the Asian country.
