Just once every four years it becomes acceptable for the female of the species to subvert tradition and ask for their boyfriend’s hand in marriage.

And with 29 February fast approaching and Valentine’s day almost upon
us, there are likely millions of women plucking up the courage to do just that.

Thousands of women propose to their partners each leap year. But that figure could be a lot higher if the women concerned had more confidence that their significant others would say yes.

Taking the plunge: 44 per cent of men say they would accept if their girlfriend proposed

A survey by PopCap Games revealed that while only 31 per cent of women believe their boyfriend would accept their proposal, the figure is actually much higher.

When asked, 44 per cent of men insisted they would say yes if their girlfriend took the ultimate plunge.

And more than a third of men (36 per cent) said they would welcome a proposal from their better half.

But while a significant portion of men would welcome this gender role reversal, the study revealed that ultimately, British men are still a traditional lot.

More than a third of men (36 per cent) said they would welcome a proposal from their girlfriend.

Almost three quarters of men think the status quo – where the man requests the woman’s hand in marriage – is fitting with modern times, with just 27 per cent saying they felt it was an outdated tradition.

The discrepancy was even more marked among the younger age group, where only one in ten 18 to 24 year olds thought the traditional way was outdated.

And close to a third of men admitted they would be embarrassed to tell their friends that it was their girlfriend who had proposed.

A word of warning to any women preparing to put a ring on their man’s finger this year – start saving now. Around half of men polled said if the woman proposes, she should have to buy her own ring.

A stingy one in ten men confided that they would like their partner to propose so they would be relieved of the financial burden of splashing out on a diamond engagement ring.

Away from the real world, Jersey Shores star Snooki May told Jay Leno that in the absence of a proposal from her boyfriend, she was planning to take matters in hand.

‘[I’m giving him] two years,’ she said on the Leno show. ‘I’m 24 now. He has until 26 to ask me. If he doesn’t ask me, I’m asking him!’

YOU ARE NOT ALONE… London Eye expects one proposal every 10 minutes on Valentine’s Day

The London Eye has been recognised as one of London’s most romantic tourist destinations after it averaged more than one proposal every 10 minutes last Valentine’s Day.

Workers at the London Eye are expecting a similar number of men to get down on one knee tomorrow.

The landmark has set aside a ‘Cupid’s Capsule’ which couples can have all to themselves to make the proposal extra special.

The capsule comes with a personal host who will ply the couple with with luxury Charbonnel et Walker chocolates and a bottle of Pommery Brut Royal Champagne.

Just post a letter in the paper lads, too all concerned no thanks.

My boyfriend has already told me that if I were to propose to him he would say no. He says that he wants to make it really special and wants to come up with something special to make it amazing:) I’m a very lucky girl indeed and would really be happy with a proposal in Tesco and a hula hoop ring lol. Sorry, gushing soppy-ness over!

As someone who has been married for twenty years, gentlemen, for God’s sakes,
JUST SAY NO!!!

I know you’ll be reading this today Stephie. The answer is YES.

In a few years when she waltzes off with your house and belongings, don`t sue the DM !!!

I think it’s really nice to carry on traditions and good luck to the women who do get down on one knee tomorrow 🙂

If my girlfriend asked me to marry her I would have to say no, my wife won’t let me.

It’s “acceptable” for women to do whatever they like, whenever they like. Stop writing about women as if we’re pathetic chattel with no minds of our own.
– Mindy, Lancashire, 13/2/2012 15:48″. Mindy, thanks. You’ve summed up the decline of the West in one neat comment. It is acceptable in society for women to do whatever they like, whenever they want and society and the law in the West condones and even rewards this.

It’s a “no” from me.

I don’t think a woman proposing is likely to lead to a happy marriage. Marriage for men is a much bigger step and legally a bigger risk, they should not be hurried into it but be given time to be sure a woman is right for them. Otherwise both parties might be regretful as no woman wants to be married to a man that is not truly committed to her. Just treat him well and wait ladies would be my advice.

Will these women wine and dine the man, get down on one knee and propose, buy him a ring worth 6 months of her wages and buy her own ring? Of course not, that’s too much equality for 99.8% of women! Not to mention it being a massive blow to their narcissism and legendary stinginess. Women conveniently call their own sexism ‘tradition’ when it suits them, yet wouldn’t tolerate any similar old-fashioned expectations of men on them. Women want to maintain their lucrative monopoly on the dating/engagement/marriage and divorce racket, and then audaciously keep a straight face when they squawk on about equality.
