A popular Jewish politician in Brooklyn, New York, is under fire after dressing up like a black man, according to press reports in New York.
Assemblyman Dov Hikind said however, that he meant no offense by appearing at a Purim party dressed as a black basketball player, with his face painted black, a wig and makeup.
Purim is a Jewish holiday that is usually celebrated with costumes. Hikind organized a big Purim party at his home and hired a makeup artist to transform him for the occasion. He also wore a orange jersey and sunglasses.
Hikind told news reporters: “It never crossed my mind for a second that this blackface costume might be offensive.
If I was black, on Purim I would have had my face look like I was white.”
Hikind said he was bewildered by the reaction to his costume which has not been well received and said that everything was done in good taste.
