Botswana Bets on Tourism, Not Hunting – Stops Issuing Permits to Kill Wild Animals

Apparently Botswana has learned to value of keeping wild animals alive. China Daily reports that the nation will stop issuing hunting permits next year, saying that permitted hunting is fueling poaching, with the loss of wildlife hurting its tourism—which accounts for 12% of the nation’s GDP.

Announcing the move, President Ian Khama starkly said, “Our wildlife control measure through issuance of hunting licenses has reached its limit.”

Will it actually help stop poaching? Considering how poachers are increasingly being assisted by international criminal syndicates, and are increasingly militarized in the process, I somehow doubt it. But it is a positive step.
