A group of reporters was recently sent to Homs, about 160 kilometers (100 miles) north of the capital, to present a clearer picture of the realities on the ground.
The group, which was accompanied by a number of Syrian army personnel, had a difficult entry to the city due to the presence of snipers positioned on the rooftops of buildings.
“Armed men have turned the place into a military field,” said one the reporters.
“The impact of the clashes between the Syrian army and armed gangs was clear.”
As we proceeded, we saw many shops that had been sabotaged and barriers that sometimes were so high that they blocked the gates of buildings, he described.
The reporting team also visited the Joret al-Shayyah neighborhood of Homs that had witnessed fierce clashes between the Syrian troops and armed groups.
The buildings located in strategic areas served as positions for the snipers, who block roads between neighborhoods in Homs, the reporter stated, adding that armed gangs had created holes in the walls of houses linking them to the streets nearby to facilitate their movement.
According to the Syrian army personnel accompanying the reporting group, the issue of holes in the walls was one of the challenges they faced when they first entered the area.
The head of the special military operations told the group that his team had entered the area upon request from residents and that they had killed and injured more than 400 armed men. A number of Syrian troops had also been killed in the fighting, he said.
Homs has been one of the major scenes of clashes between Syrian forces and armed groups over the past months of unrest in the country.
Many people, including members of Syrian security forces, have been killed in the turmoil that began in March 2011.
