Syrian official slams US interference

Under the pretext of advocating human rights and democracy, the US interferes in regional countries’ internal affairs and supports terrorism and the fabrication of unrest and crises in countries, including Syria, Mohammed Jihad al-Laham said in a meeting with Iran’s Ambassador to Damascus Mohammad Reza Raouf Sheibani on Tuesday.

He lauded Iran’s sincere support of the Palestinians’ rights and the Islamic Republic’s cooperation on issues pertaining to regional countries and the Arab world.

The Syrian official said that Tehran and Damascus were in a joint front against enemies and added Syria could use Iran’s experience in overcoming Western economic pressure to confront sanctions imposed by the West and certain Arab countries.

In the meeting, Sheibani submitted Iran’s acting Majlis Speaker Ali Larijani’s congratulatory message to al-Lahm.

Sheibani said that the simultaneous opening of the two countries’ parliaments was a suitable opportunity for the further expansion of mutual parliamentary cooperation.

The Iranian envoy said that public support for the government and the vigilant leadership were among the factors that helped Damascus stand up to foreign plots.

The new Syrian parliament began work on May 24 under a new constitution approved by a majority of voters in a February referendum.

Al-Lahm was elected as the new Syrian parliament speaker in the opening session of the assembly.

Parliamentary elections were held in Syria earlier this month as part of President Bashar al Assad’s political reforms.
