Syrian general dies of explosion wounds

On Wednesday, the blast also killed Syrian Defense Minister Dawoud Rajiha, his deputy Assef Shawkat and Assistant Vice President Hassan Turkmani in the capital Damascus.

Ikhtiyar, who was injured with Interior Minister Mohammed al-Shaar in the bombing, was pronounced dead on Friday.

The terrorist Free Syrian Army has claimed responsibility for the attack. It has also warned of more violence in the capital in the coming days.

Following the incident, Syrian President Bashar al-Assad appointed chief of staff of the armed forces General Fahd al-Jassem al-Freij as the country’s new defense minister.

Meanwhile, Syria’s Information Minister Omran Zohbi blamed Western spy agencies for the bombing.

“All those who incite to violence, all those who campaign against Syria, whether they be media outlets, officials or the (UN) Security Council, and particularly all those who ignore the presence of armed men, must bear the full responsibility for this crime,” Zohbi said.

The Syrian army also pledged a crushing response to armed groups fighting against the government, stressing that it will continue to fight terrorism and wipe out criminal gangs.
