Syrian citizen journalist on reporting inside Homs

“Every time the army gets close its losing lots of troops so what are they
doing now? Randomly bombarding the whole area with rockets. They don’t care
what they hit, civilians or army they are just bombarding it with more than
500 rockets a day,” he explains.

Human Rights Watch claim that President Bashar al-Assad’s forces “have
fired hundreds of shells and mortars into populated neighbourhoods”,
killing at least 300 people in Homs since February 3.

As one of the few people able to report from inside the city, Abdul Dayem has
seen his video work published by CNN and Al Jazeera but for him it is not a
dispassionate job of chronicling the destruction of his city.

He is an activist who wants to see intervention by the international community
to help arm the Syrian Free Army so they can overthrow Assad’s regime; he is
less interested in humanitarian aid which he feels would merely prolong the
struggle.

“As a Syrian, do I want to be fed and fed until I am fat enough so they can
slaughter me? Or would I like a weapon to defend myself and finish this
thing quicker? I say let me starve a bit and let us finish this story.”
