‘Syria unrest, West’s diversionary tactic’

“The West seeks to build up tension in this country (Syria) in a bid to divert the world public opinion from its own economic problems,” IRNA quoted Sajjadi as saying on Wednesday.

Sajjadi lashed out at the West’s double standards on the international issues, particularly those of the Middle East, and argued that behind the Syrian crisis, the West and some Arab states have basically targeted Iran and Hezbollah movement in Lebanon.

The Iranian envoy also questioned the call for democracy in Syria by the autocratic Arab regimes in the Persian Gulf and pointed out that these monarchies suffer from domestic crises due to the absence of democratic systems in their countries and have therefore focused on Syria in an attempt to delay the emergence of further internal crises.

Sajjadi warned that the deterioration of the Syrian unrest will immediately afflict Syria’s neighbors, the Mediterranean states and the Persian Gulf Arab countries and will also exacerbate the crises in Iraq, Libya, Lebanon and Afghanistan.

Syria has been experiencing unrest since mid-March and many people have lost their lives in the violence.

The West and the Syrian opposition accuse the government of killing the protesters, but Damascus blames ”outlaws, saboteurs and armed terrorist groups” for the unrest, insisting that it is being orchestrated from abroad.
