‘Syria unrest threatens Lebanon stability’

In an interview with Lebanese daily al-Safir published on Saturday, Aoun said any destabilization of President Bashar al-Assad’s government will directly affect Lebanon.

Last month Aoun had warned that if the western backed Syrian opposition comes to power there will be chaos in the region.

However, the Change and Reform bloc leader in Lebanon’s parliament noted that he is confident that al-Assad government is able to “stay standing.”

Referring to a recent visit by US Assistant Secretary of State for Near Eastern Affairs Jeffrey Feltman and US Senator Joseph Lieberman to Lebanon, Aoun said the two American officials had made the visit aimed at the establishment of a buffer zone near Lebanon’s border with Syria in support of oppositions in the crisis-hit country, but they failed.

Aoun’s remarks came few days after the Syrian Foreign Ministry said in a statement on June 13 that the country is experiencing a war against the “armed groups which chose terrorism as their way to achieve their objectives and conspire against the present and future of the Syrian people.”

On June 3, President Assad said, “Standing up against the conspiracy is not easy, but we will overcome the obstacles.”

The anti-Syria Western governments and the opposition blame Damascus for the past months of turmoil in the Arab country. However, the Syrian government has repeatedly said foreign-sponsored “saboteurs and terrorists” are responsible for the deadly unrest which has resulted in the death of many people, including Syrian security forces.
