Syria: Russia and Iran call for political solution to Syrian conflict

Lebanese Army killed terrorists of the Al-Qaeda-linked al-Nusra Front.

A unit of the Lebanese Army has successfully eliminated several armed terrorists of the Al-Qaeda-affiliated al-Nusra Front (Jabhat al-Nusra), while Moscow and Tehran have again called for a political and peaceful solution to the crisis and conflict in Syria.

The armed jihadists of the so-called al-Nusra Front (Jabhat al-Nusra, a Syrian Al-Qaeda offshoot) were killed by the Lebanese soldiers in the region of Arsal. However, it is no surprise that terrorists of the al-Nusra Front (Jabhat al-Nusrah) were in the region of Arsal (Aarsal) in Lebanon.

According to the reports, the soldiers of the Lebanese Army have fired at a minibus in the area of Arsal. The minibus was carrying some terrorists of the al-Nusra Front. The attack by the Lebanese Army has successfully killed one of the armed jihadists in the minibus, while two other Islamists were wounded in this attack.

There is currently no more information available about the attack by Lebanese Army soldiers on this minibus carrying several jihadists of the Al-Qaeda-affiliated al-Nusra Front (Jabhat al-Nusra) in the region of Arsal.

As mentioned, Moscow and Tehran have again stressed that a political and diplomatic solution to the Syrian conflict is important and represents the only solution to the crisis in Syria that is able to resolve the problems in and around the Arab country. The Iranian Foreign Minister Mohammad Javad Zarif and the well-known Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov have underlined the need to accelerate the finding of a political solution to the ongoing conflict in Syria on the side-lines of the 68th annual session of the UN General Assembly in New York.

Both Foreign Ministers, the Russian Foreign Minister Lavrov and his Iranian counterpart Zarif have called on all sides directly or indirectly involved in the Syrian conflict and crisis to increase their efforts to find a political and peaceful solution to the ongoing crisis in the Arab country on the side-lines of the UN General Assembly meeting in New York.

Of course, the Foreign Minister of Iran and his Russian counterpart also discussed the bilateral cooperation between Russia and Iran at their meeting. Beside the discussions about the Syrian conflict, the regional and international developments, and the US-Israeli problems and dispute with the nuclear energy program of Tehran, of course.

The Iranian Foreign Minister Mohammad Javad Zarif has further condemned the use of chemical weapons by anybody and anywhere. Iran’s Foreign Minister said that everybody in Syria should be disarmed of chemical weapons and that this also includes the so-called “opposition forces”.

After the Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov has already called on all sides fighting in Syria that they destroy their chemical weapons and said that also the so-called “opposition forces” have to destroy the chemical arms in their hands and not only the Syrian government, Iran has thus joined this call by Moscow.

Sergey Lavrov also said recently that there is evidence that armed terrorists groups could be in possess of some chemical weapons. Russia’s Foreign Minister added that there are also some witnesses who confirm that terrorists in Syria have access to chemical weapons. At least, it is to assume that not only the Syrian government could use chemical weapons in Syria, but that also the foreign-backed terrorists have already access to chemical weapons.

Sergey Lavrov also said on the side-lines of the UN General Assembly meeting in New York after his meeting with U.S. Secretary of State John Kerry that he assumes that the resolution at the UN Security Council (UNSC) will pass and that the differences between the United States and Russia can be resolved. However, the meeting at the UN Security Council (UNSC) will sure get interesting, especially in terms of the differences between Washington and Moscow.

While the United States has tried to blackmail Russia in terms of the resolution and wants a reference to the Chapter 7 of the UN Charter in the upcoming resolution, Russia still rejects such a reference to the Chapter 7 of the UN Charter, which would allow the use of (military) forces against Syria in order to “restore international peace”.

Although the Russian Foreign Minister Lavrov said that the differences in the views between Russia and the United States will be resolved and the planned resolution at the UN Security Council (UNSC) on Syria will pass, it is to assume that certain problems and differences will remain. The resolution is meant to support the Russian-US “Agreement” about Syria’s chemical weapons and the process to destroy the chemical weapons arsenal in Syria with the help of the Organisation for the Prohibition of Chemical Weapons (OPCW).

The Organisation for the Prohibition of Chemical Weapons (OPCW) will soon provide a plan and deadline for the destruction of Syria’s chemical weapons stockpiles and sent several experts to Syria. The experts of the Organisation for the Prohibition of Chemical Weapons (OPCW) will investigate the chemical weapons arsenal of Syria and monitor the transport and destruction of the chemical arms.

Although no official speaks about this, but it is currently to assume that forces of the Collective Security Treaty Organization (CSTO) will provide security for the experts of the OPCW in Syria and even be involved in the transport and destruction of Syria’s chemical weapons. However, a lot around this topic of Syria’s chemical weapons arsenal still remains to be seen… and to be discussed.
