Syria rejects UN rights chief claims

Syria’s permanent envoy to the UN Bashar Ja’afari told the General Assembly on Monday that it is absolutely clear that those fighting against the Syrian government will testify against it and the UN rights body should have based its report on testimonies by people living inside Syria not those living in refugee camps in Turkey.

He also criticized Pillay for describing living conditions in Syria as tragic without referring to the reasons leading to the predicament. Ja’afari said that the Western-backed sanctions imposed against Damascus were to blame for the dire situation not the Damascus government.

The Syrian envoy also accused the UN human rights Chief of ignoring strong documents proving the involvement of al-Qaeda in his country unrest.

”Al-Qaeda has said on its website that five of its members were killed in the Syrian cities of Homs and Deir al-Zour and has called on its members to go to Syria and fight against the Syrian government, but they were ignored in Pillay’s reports on Syria,” Ja’afari said.

He also said several Arab states, including Qatar, fueled unrest in Syria by arming and funding terrorist groups fighting against the government of President Bashar al-Assad.

Ja’afari said Qatar hosts armed opposition groups that refuse negotiations with the Syrian government and are responsible for the killing of Syrians.

He, however, stressed that Damascus is determined and capable of protecting its people and called on the international community to help the Syrian government in fighting terrorists and implementing reforms demanded by people.

He also said that his country has established a committee investigating the country’s months-long violence and those involved in acts of violence will be brought to justice.

Ja’afari addressed the UN General Assembly shortly after Navi Pillay, who accused Damascus of cracking down on protests.
