Syria ready for talks with opposition

“We, the government and me personally will meet, without exceptions, with Syrian opposition groups inside and outside (Syria),” Ali Haidar told a parliamentary session on Monday.

Haidar also noted that any “preparatory talks” would be different from a national dialogue.

“The president of the country has said that we will try with everyone that is against us politically. And even those who use arms – we must try with them,” he added. “With regard to negotiations, the door is open,” Haidar said.

Eaerlier, Syrian President Bashar al-Assad said he is confident that the country’s Army will win the conflict against the foreign-backed militants who are fighting the government.

“We are convinced that the future is ours…. Syria has the will power to defeat the conspiracy,” [which is] backed by Western and regional powers, Assad said.

On Sunday, the United Nations (UN) Arab League Special Envoy to Syria Lakhdar Brahimi invited the opposition and a delegation from the government to hold talks at the United Nations.

Syria has been experiencing unrest since March 2011. Many people, including large numbers of security forces, have been killed in the turmoil.

The Syrian government has said that the chaos is being orchestrated from outside the country, and that a very large number of the militants operating in the country are foreign nationals.
