nsnbc : Syria peace talks in Geneva, Switzerland, kick off on Saturday, January 30, after the “opposition” Syrian Opposition High Negotiation Committee (HNC) confirmed that it would participate and head for Geneva on Saturday.
The HNC is an umbrella organization for 17 political and military “opposition” groups, including the remnants of the Free Syrian Army (FSA), Jaysh al-Islam, Jabhat Al-Nusrah, and other Al-Qaeda franchises. The meeting was arranged after talks between HNC representatives and the Russian government in Moscow.
Russian diplomats suggest that the Syrian Kurdish YPG / PYG also should have a place at the negotiating table. The suggestion comes as the wars in Syria and Iraq, develop into a cold-war-like proxy war with Washington and Moscow supporting each their “favorite Kurds”.
A HNC spokesperson informed the press that the HNC delegation heads to Geneva on Saturday while HNC head Dr. Riyadh Hijab, will follow them on Sunday.
The HNC‘s decision to head to Geneva comes after the HNC canceled its participation twice, insisting on terms and preconditions including a ceasefire; a precondition that would be virtually impossible to implement in a complex war theater as that in Syria, say military experts. Moscow has encouraged the HNC to meet without preconditions.
The Syrian government delegation is headed by the Syrian Arab Republic’s Permanent Representative to the UN, Dr. Bashar al-Jaafari who met UN Special Envoy on Syria Staffan De Mistura on Friday. UN sources quote al-Jaafari, saying that he affirmed during the meeting that Syrians are committed to preserving Syria’s unity, independence, sovereignty, and the unity of its people, and that he pointed out that certain sides are sponsoring terrorist entities and refusing to classify them as international terrorist organizations.
Dr. Bashar al-Jaafari stressed that there are sides which use the label “moderate opposition” to describe foreign terrorists, that these sides support terrorism and are running proxy wars on Syrian territories, and that UN Security Council resolutions listed ISIS and Jabhat al-Nusrah and all those affiliated to them as terrorist organizations, which means that Ahrar al-Sham movement is also a terrorist organization.
Al-Jaafari affirmed the seriousness of the Syrian government regarding dialogue and finding a political solution for the crisis and stressed that this must be a solution that is defined by the Syrian people without any foreign interference. The delegation headed by al-Jaafari includes Syria’s representative at the UN in Geneva Hussameddin Ala, Adviser to Foreign and Expatriates Minister Ahmad Arnous, Ahmad Kizbari, Mohamed Khair al-Akkam, Amal Yazigi, Hasan al-Bahri, Omar Ossi, Amjad Issa, Ammar Ersan, Jamila Shurbaji, Rafah Breidi, Elias Shahin, Samir Breidi, Osama Ali, and Rouaa Shurbaji.
