Syria: Opposition and Assad regime ‘agree to Russia mediation’

Sergei Lavrov has said Syria President Bashar al Assad assured him he was “fully
committed” to a cessation of violence amid an ongoing bloody crackdown

The Russian foreign minister hailed his “very useful” talks with Mr
Assad today.

“We (Russia) confirmed our readiness to act for a rapid solution to the
crisis based on the plan put forward by the Arab League,” said Mr
Lavrov, adding that Syria was also ready see an enlarged Arab League mission
in the country, Russian news agencies said.

He spoke after holding talks in Damascus today with Mr Assad. Mr Lavrov was
greeted by cheering crowds, supporters of the regime who thanked Russia for
its veto of a UN Security Council vote condemning the Syrian president’s
actions.

More than 100 people have died in the last 48 hours as Mr Assad’s forces
bombard civilians rebelling against his rule in a bloody crackdown.

Mr Lavrov revealed the results of his talks as much of the rest of the Western
world, condemning Russia and China for the vote, did its best to isolate
Syria diplomatically.

France has decided to withdraw its ambassador, a foreign ministry spokesman
said today.

“Faced with the worsening repression being carried out by the Damascus
regime against its own population, French authorities have decided to recall
France’s ambassador to Syria for consultations,” Bernard Valero said.

“We have begun discussions with our partners in Brussels to reinforce
sanctions once again,” he added, referring to the European Union’s
economic measures against Assad’s government and major supporters.

Paris’s decision came after Italy, Britain and the United States also withdrew
their envoys. Valero said the French ambassador would be back in Paris “within
the next few days”.

The European Union has no plans to withdraw its head of delegation from Syria,
a spokesman said today, stressing that the EU needs a presence there to “report
and observe”.

Meanwhile, Turkey’s Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan announced a new
initiative “with those countries who stand by the Syrian people, not
the regime.”

Mr Valero said France was following Turkey’s plan carefully, but so far had
little information about it. He called on Mr Lavrov to use Russia’s
influence to pressure Syria into accepting a regional peace plan.

“We expect Mr Lavrov will use his visit to Damascus to make the regime
understand its isolation and to support the Arab League plan, a brave
initiative that must be the basis of any solution,” he said.

The spokesman noted that on Monday, France’s Foreign Minister Alain Juppe had
met with the leadership of the Syrian opposition in exile and had called
regional leaders to discuss the crisis.
