One of the best known media campaign slogans in the information war against the enemies of the “civilized world” is:
“The authenticity of these images can not be independently verified.”
In the Internet there are apparently layman experts for everything.
Including those who spend hours each day to watch all the notorious “rebel videos” and try to – with all open available measures – to determine the exact locations of the clips (and images) and to then derive tactical maps of the current situation.
A Russian blogger (once again) evaluates such videos for a long time now and he determines, from eye-catching landmarks and by the use of simple tools like Google Earth and Google Maps, the location of the respective event.
He is able to not only identify all kinds and types of armoured vehicles without problems, but also to individual machines and thus, for example, he is following the way of the armoured vehicles, which were stolen by the “rebels”, through the various places of the conflict. All this just with the help of the public resources like Youtube or Liveleak. Noteworthy.
Here, he is positioning himself as politically neutral or even as non-political, although purely from the taste it seems that there is a slight pro-rebel tendency (he refers to the latter as “rebels”, while the Syrian army are “loyalists” for him). Anyway, he gets a lot of data out of his work and he just publishes the data on the internet.
Including the current location of certain Syrian army subunits, the radius of action of the various rebel factions and Islamists, as well as statistics and the documented losses of the army, what specifically concerns the armoured vehicles of the Syrian army. This is also published at regular intervals.
It will surely be worth to continue to keep an eye on his work in future, too. Just yesterday, current data about the losses of the Syrian army armoured vehicles (he does not lead a body count) was published. I have visualized the data for the German readers.
In terms of the details it is important to remember that this data about the losses were only documented by video, thus, it is a minimum. But in terms of the regional allocation of losses, one is sure able to derive some results. Overall and definitely that this devastating effect certainly has nothing to do with the long-forgotten “peaceful demonstrators”.
“Losses of Tanks”
Documented losses of armoured vehicles in the Syrian conflict. Total: 862
Tanks: 380
Infantry fighting vehicles: 320
Command post vehicles: 6
Armoured recovery vehicles: 7
Self-propelled guns: 14
Armoured personnel carriers: 14
Self-propelled anti-aircraft weapons: 24
Reconnaissance vehicles (BRDM): 26
Shilka / (Flak) Self-propelled guns: 30
Armored cars: 31
Documented losses of armoured vehicles in the Syrian conflict – regional. Total: 862
What one could do now would be the creation of a representation of the losses over time in each region in order to better illustrate the individual phases of the war against Syria.
At the total losses over time one is able to see some interesting turning points, for example, which could be related to the so-called “Annan plan” or the temporary “Let Go” of Aleppo. It is also clear that the intensity of the fighting is still enormous.
