Syria kills mastermind behind bombings

Syrian security forces stormed a “den of an armed terrorist group” in a Damascus countryside on Saturday and killed al-Qaeda-linked terrorist ring leader Walid Ahmad al-Ayesh, following armed clashes, official Syrian News Agency (SANA) reported.

According to the report, al-Ayesh, nicknamed Yasser, had supervised all the car bombings in Damascus in recent months that killed and injured hundreds.

An unknown number of weapons and ammunition were reportedly seized by Syrian authorities during the operation.

The report describes al-Ayesh as “the right hand” man of al-Qaeda affiliate ‘Jabhat al-Nusra’ (al-Nusra front), which is reportedly involved in the foreign-sponsored terror campaign against Syrian forces as well as ordinary citizens.

The first major car-bomb blasts were carried out against two Syrian security centers in Damascus on December 22, using two explosives-laden vehicles.

Damascus was also the target of a major terrorist assault on May 10, when the state TV said 55 people were killed and nearly 400 others injured in two bomb attacks on a main freeway south of the capital.

The latest car bombing in Damascus took place last Thursday near the holy shrine of Lady Zeinab (PBUH), the granddaughter of Islam’s revered prophet, injuring 14 bystanders.

The latest attack in Damascus came days after UN Under Secretary General for Peacekeeping Operations Herve Ladsous claimed on June 12 that the Syrian crisis could now be characterized as a civil war.

However, according to a June 13 report by SANA, the Syrian Foreign Ministry insisted in a statement that any talk about a “civil war” in Syria “contradicts the nature of the Syrian people.”

Syria is experiencing a war against “armed groups which chose terrorism as their way to achieve their objectives and conspire against the present and future of the Syrian people,” the statement added.
