The Franco-German journalist and publicist Peter Scholl-Latour was not only a member of the “Commando Parachutiste Ponchardier” unit (French paratroopers), with whom he has also fought in the First Indochina War, but also someone who completed his doctoral studies and gained his master`s in Islamic and Arab studies, too.
Mr. Peter Scholl-Latour is well known in Europe and even in a lot of other regions. He gained his master`s in Arab and Islamic studies (for example) at the Saint Joseph University of Beirut and has worked as a journalist since 1950. Scholl-Latour also worked as correspondent in Indochina and Africa and as an editor-in-chief for the German magazine “Stern”. He is one of the few real European experts about affairs in the Middle East.
We gave you a small introduction about this Franco-German journalist and expert because Mr. Scholl-Latour gave another interesting interview about the situation in Syria and the Security Council of the United Nations (UN).
Peter Scholl-Latour is convinced that there is no longer just a local conflict in Syria. The expert of affairs in the Middle East said in this interview with a German magazine that the so-called “uprising” in Syria had been defeated long ago by the Syrian army, government and intelligence, if there would not be a constantly intervention from outside Syria.
In his first answer within this interview, Scholl-Latour also explained that the so-called “Free Syrian Army” (FSA) and other rebels get their weapons with the help of Saudi Arabia or / and Turkey. Without this outside support of the uprising against the Syrian President Bashar al-Assad, the uprising would have collapsed into itself in Syria already a long time ago.
Mr. Scholl-Latour had also to answer the question, how long the Syrian President al-Assad will be able to stay, considering the uprising in Syria. The Franco-German journalist and author said, that this is hard to predict. He met with the Syrian President al-Assad ten days ago.
At this time, so Scholl-Latour, the situation within the Syrian capital Damascus was completely calm and the Syrian President made a very loose impression to him. Peter Scholl-Latour had not the impression that the Syrian regime is already going down. We will see, so this journalist, whether his family clan, the Alawis (Alawites), which are occupying the leadership positions in the army and intelligence service, will stand to him in the next weeks.
He also mentioned, that he has impression, that the huge majority of the Syrian population wants a quit situation. The middle class in Syria is not interested in a situation as in states like Libya or Iraq. Scholl-Latour also stated, that people should not forget about the fact, that Syria is the last remaining secular state in the Arab World and that the Christian minority in Syria fears nothing more than the overthrow of the Syrian President Bashar al-Assad.
We only have doubts about his statement that the Alawis are occupying the leadership positions in the Syrian army and intelligence services because we know a different situation and the Syrian government always acted very smart when it was about this “influence”.
Mr. Scholl-Latour spoke about the UN Security Council afterwards. He said, that you can “forget” the Security Council of the United Nations (UN). When it comes hard to hard, so Scholl-Latour, Russia and possibly China will use their veto rights again. He explained the fact that Russia maintains a naval base in Tartus (Tartous), Syria, which they want to also maintain in upcoming years. This Russian naval base in the Syrian city of Tartous (Tartus) is very important for Moscow.
Peter Scholl-Latour has no impressions that the sanctions on Syria are useful. He stated that the only effect of these sanctions on Syria is that the poor have to suffer even more. Sanctions, so the Franco-German journalist and author, have never led in the collapse a regime.
On the question if there will be a military intervention in Syria, the Middle East expert answered that the international community has not really the resources for a real military intervention in Syria. It would have gone almost awry in Libya, so Scholl-Latour. The Americans are not yet “finished” with Afghanistan and already received a setback in Iraq. The United States should not have the slightest intention to start a new war in Syria.
In the end of this interview, Mr. Scholl-Latour has mentioned the important topic Iran. He said that the international community is making a mistake. The international community is obsessed by it that there is a grave danger from Tehran. (Perhaps because of the pressure by Israel and Lobbies like AIPAC).
Peter Scholl-Latour has the opinion, that a war against Iran is completely futile, even unpromising. Syria and the “Assad regime”, so the Franco-German author at the end of this interesting interview, is based on Iran.
