Syria condemns illegitimate sanctions

Syrian Ambassador to the UN Bashar al-Ja’afari made the remarks in his UN address on Thursday after China and Russia vetoed a new Western-backed draft resolution against the Syrian government.

The draft — backed cheifly by the United States, Britain, France, Germany and Portugal — threatened to impose sanctions against Syrian President Bashar Assad’s government ‘if the violence continues to escalate in the country.’

Ja’afari said UN-Arab League envoy Kofi Annan’s peace plan requires sincere international political will to succeed, warning that some countries want Annan’s plan to fail.

The ambassador also warned that the world body’s failure to take the right measure on Syria will give a wrong message to the terrorists in the Arab country.

He said the unrest in Syria is complex and multi-dimensional, adding that some countries are interested in adding fuel to the flames of the crisis.

Since mid-March 2011, Syria has been experiencing a deadly unrest which has claimed the lives of many people, including security forces.

The West and the Syrian opposition accuse the government of killing protesters, but Damascus blames ‘outlaws, saboteurs, and armed terrorist groups’ for the unrest, asserting that it is being orchestrated from abroad.
