“President Bashar al-Assad issued today a decree setting Sunday, February 26, as the date for the referendum on the draft constitution,” SANA reported on Wednesday.
The news agency added that Assad made the decision after he received the draft form a committee set up in October to draw up the new constitution.
The report noted that the Syrian president would send the draft to the People’s Assembly for a vote.
In January, Assad said that the new constitution will replace the current one which endorses his Baath party’s dominant role.
In July, 2011, Syrian government adopted a new law allowing a multi-party political system after it lifted a state of emergency in April.
Syria has been experiencing unrest since mid-March 2011. The government blames ”outlaws, saboteurs, and armed terrorist groups” for the violence, insisting that it is being orchestrated from abroad. The West and the opposition claim the government is behind the killings of protesters.
