Syria army, insurgents clash near Aleppo

The Syrian government forces ambushed a number of insurgents in Aleppo’s Kafar Halab district while the army also clashed with the insurgents in a suburb.

Dozens of armed men, including foreigners, were killed in the fighting.

The government forces in Aleppo earlier on Thursday managed to destroy the telecommunication system the insurgents had been provided by Turkey.

Much of the fighting in the country’s largest city is now concentrated in the outskirts of the city.

Over the past few days, dozens of insurgents have also been killed by the Syrian troops in the capital, Damascus, and the western city of Homs.

The Syrian army forces are, meanwhile, clearing the Damascus countryside of the insurgents fighting the government of President Bashar al-Assad.

On Thursday, Kofi Annan announced his resignation as the special UN-Arab League envoy to Syria, citing the violence that has spiraled further out of control.

Syrian Foreign Ministry expressed regrets over Annan’s decision, stressing that Damascus would remain committed to the six-point peace plan negotiated by the former UN chief.
