Syria army defuses bomb in Damascus

The development comes as Lebanon said on Saturday its border guards seized a truck transporting arms and ammunition into Syria.

Lebanese authorities said the guards also arrested eight people of Syrian nationality in connection with the seizure.

Meanwhile, Syrian security forces also destroyed five vehicles transporting weapons for foreign-sponsored insurgents on the main highway between Damascus and the northwestern city of Aleppo on the same day.

Many people, including large numbers of security forces, have been killed in the turmoil that began in Syria in March 2011.

On September 9, 27 people were killed in a bomb attack carried out in Aleppo.

Syrian President Bashar al-Assad met with UN-Arab League Special Representative for Syria Lakhdar Brahimi in Damascus on Saturday.

Brahimi, the former UN envoy to Afghanistan and Iraq, replaced Kofi Annan, who stepped down as the UN-Arab League envoy for Syria at the end of August.

Assad said during the meeting that the political work in Syria “continues, in particular by calling for dialogue between Syrians based on the aspirations of all Syrians.”

“The success of political action is dependent on putting pressure on the countries that finance and train the terrorists, and which bring weapons into Syria, until they stop doing so,” he stated.

The Syrian president also said Damascus would “cooperate with all sincere efforts to solve the crisis, so long as the efforts are neutral and independent.”
