The Syrian troops inflicted heavy losses on the insurgents in Damascus’ countryside on Wednesday, killing and arresting dozens of them during the operation.
The Syrian forces have also ambushed and killed a number of the insurgents in the Kafar Halab district in the northwestern city of Aleppo.
Over the past few days, dozens of insurgents have also been killed by the Syrian troops in the capital and the western city of Homs.
Syria has been experiencing unrest since March 2011.
Damascus says ‘outlaws, saboteurs, and armed terrorists’ are behind the unrest while the West and the opposition accuse the security forces of killing protesters.
Western states have been calling on Assad to step down.
However, Russia and China are strongly opposed to the Western drive to oust Assad.
