The centrepiece of Sydney’s New Year’s Eve celebrations, the Harbour Bridge, is a symbol around the world, NSW Premier Barry O’Farrell says.
Sydney is seen first as the world herald’s in the new year, Mr O’Farrell said.
“We get seen first around the world celebrating New Year’s Eve,” he told Macquarie Radio.
“That’s important for Sydney and of course it means the greatest symbol of Australia on New Year’s Eve, for most people around the world, is the Harbour Bridge.
“And people in Sydney, 1.5 million people, can get to enjoy it.”
Seven tonnes of pyrotechnic explosives will shoot heavenwards by midnight, following 15 months of meticulous planning.
The Harbour Bridge is traditionally the key focal point of the spectacular display.
But director Marc Newson has remained tight-lipped about the much-anticipated final effect on the bridge, insisting it will remain top secret until the stroke of midnight.
But he’s promised a show that’s bigger and better than last year.
