Sydney Water hires former Qantas CTO

Sydney Water has appointed a new CIO, nabbing Qantas’ former chief technology officer Stephen Wilson.

Wilson joined Qantas as chief technology officer in 2010, arriving there from a five-year stint as the NSW Department of Education CIO. There, he was the chief architect for the digital education revolution, facilitated the Connected Classrooms Program and worked on the department’s massive but troubled SAP implementation.

Now, he’s nabbed the top spot at Sydney’s water authority, as first reported by Delimiter. His appointment followed the departure of former CIO Chris Ford, who left to become the CIO of the Australian Energy Market Operator earlier this year. During his stint at Sydney Water, Ford restructured the organisation to try to improve project-delivery performance, and finished two asset-management projects.

Ford joined the authority in 2010 after the departure of Tim Catley, who had been armed with an AU$60 million budget to remedy what he thought was a decade of under-investment, following a failed billing system implementation in 2001.
