Sydney school ‘devastated’ by boy’s death

A northwestern Sydney school is devastated by the death of an eight-year-old boy, after he was hit by a car driven by another student at the end of the school day.

The boy from Beecroft was crossing Gibbons Street in Telopea when he was hit by a car, driven by a 17-year-old female student on her P-plates at 3.10pm (AEDT) on Tuesday.

He was taken to Westmead Hospital in a critical condition but later died.

The Meadowbank Education Trust, a school operated by the Exclusive Brethren, said it would be closed to students on Wednesday following the accident.

“Teachers, students and parents from the MET School in Telopea are devastated by this afternoon’s tragic accident … which resulted in the death of a Year 3 pupil,” CEO of MET John Anderson said in a statement.

“Our prayers are with the two families directly affected by this tragedy – that of the young boy who lost his life and that of the Year 12 MET. female pupil who was driving the car involved in the accident.”

Teachers, students, parents and other school staff will be offered counselling.

“We ask that the privacy of our students, teachers, parents and the wider Exclusive Brethren Church community be respected at this very difficult time.”

The parents of the boy have asked that his name not be released, the school said.
