Protesters will gather in Sydney’s CBD to call for an independent inquiry into the latest asylum seeker boat disaster and an end to mandatory detention.
Five people have been confirmed dead and 90 are still missing after a boat carrying refugees capsized en-route to Australia on Thursday.
Refugee Action Coalition spokesman Ian Rintoul says demands for an end to offshore processing and people smuggling laws will also be made at the rally.
“The deaths at sea are a direct result of successive governments – both Labor and Liberal – adhering to policies of deterrence,” Mr Rintoul said in a statement on Saturday.
“Refugee’s human rights must come first.
“We need policies that ensure that boats can get to Australia safely.”
Mr Rintoul said people need to know what exactly the protocols for rescue at sea are.
“Why would AMSA (Australian Maritime Safety Authority) instruct a distressed asylum boat to turn around rather than mobilise a proper rescue operation?” he said.
“It is clear that a proper, a prompt response by Australia maritime rescue authorities could have prevented this tragedy.”
Greens Senator Sarah Hansen-Young, Maritime union president Warren Smith and refugees from Iran and Afghanistan will address the crowd.
The rally begins at 1pm (AEST) on Sunday at Town Hall.
