Sydney man stabbed in fight over girl

A man discovered in a bloody mess on a median strip in Sydney’s southwest was stabbed 11 times following a dispute over a girl, police say.

The 24-year-old victim is lucky to be alive after he was allegedly attacked by three men at Bankstown on April 26.

He was taken to hospital in a critical condition and “still has a long way to go”, crime manager Detective Chief Inspector Glen Fitzgerald told reporters in Bankstown on Thursday.

“The incident itself is a very serious incident,” he said.

“The person stabbed 11 times was treated at hospital, (in a) critical condition and is lucky to have survived to this stage.”

Earlier in the evening, the victim had been chased out of a nearby hotel down the Hume Highway, where he was allegedly attacked before being left on the side of the road.

On Thursday, police released CCTV footage of two men they want to speak to over the attack.

“This is a last resort for us this morning,” Mr Fitzgerald said.

“We believe they may be locals. The incident itself was over a girl.

“The girl, we believe, is known to the victim and the three people depicted in the footage.”

Mr Fitzgerald said “an altercation occurred and he was set upon and chased”.

A 27-year-old man was charged the day after the attack with causing wounds to a person with intent to murder. He is currently before the courts.

Mr Fitzgerald said the CCTV footage “clearly depicted” two more people, both Middle Eastern and aged in their mid-20s. They were wearing caps and tracksuit-type dark clothing.

“We’ve done an extensive investigation. We’ve spoken to a lot of people, identified a lot of witnesses,” Mr Fitzgerald said.

“The CCTV we’ve gone through to a fine point. The last point we’re at now is to identify these two people to assist us with the inquiry.

“Preferably we would like them to come forward, identify themselves and assist us with our inquiry.”

Police are also appealing to members of the public with information to contact them.
