Sydney man pleads guilty to machete murder

One of several men charged in relation to a Sydney home invasion in which a young man was slashed with a machete has pleaded guilty to murder.

In the NSW Supreme Court on Thursday, Aneterea Tamapua pleaded guilty to the 2010 murder of Kesley Burgess at his home in Lurnea, in Sydney’s southwest.

Mr Burgess, 25, died in hospital after suffering major blood loss from wounds to much of his body, including wrists, legs and ankles.

He was attacked in his family’s home on Clingan Ave on the evening of July 1, 2010, with machetes and meat cleavers.

He had been defending his 47-year-old mother, who was wounded in the hand.

Five men have been charged in relation to the incident, which police say was carried out by a gang.

Tamapua is to be sentenced on June 1.
