The State Emergency Services (SES) Strathfield headquarters, in Sydney’s inner-west, are ablaze.
NSW Fire and Rescue (NSWFR) Superintendent Chris Jurgeit said the two-storey building near Rookwood cemetery caught fire shortly before 7pm (AEST) on Saturday.
The fire was under control and there were no homes nearby, Supt Jurgeit told AAP.
“The only residents there are the people in the cemetery,” he said.
About 25 firefighters – four trucks and an aerial appliance – were working to douse the flames, he added.
It was too early to tell what had caused the fire but it was likely the building had suffered severe structural damage, he said.
The fire comes days after SES volunteers were out in force in Sydney’s inner west, door-knocking residents before some wild weather to warn them that the Cooks River risked flooding.
