Sydney home burns as firefighters strike

A passer-by has rescued a woman and a baby from a burning home in Sydney’s south as firefighters strike across NSW.

Radio caller Andrew said he was driving along Campbell St in Sans Souci when he noticed flames coming from the front window of a house.

He said firefighters arrived half an hour after he dialled triple 0.

“When the fire brigade arrived, one of the firemen got out and a policeman said to them, ‘where have you guys been?’,” Andrew told Macquarie radio network.

“And he said, ‘we’ve been on a ban”.

Ben Shepherd from the NSW Rural Fire Service, which is covering for NSW firefighters while they are on strike, said the local RFS sent two trucks and air support as well as firefighters in breathing apparatus.

“With that initial house fire there was probably a longer response time from our trucks,” he told Fairfax Media.

“We’ll just have to address these fires as they pop up across the afternoon.”

Andrew said he helped the residents to safety before calling emergency services.

“By that time the whole upstairs of the building was well alight, the roof was collapsing and it’s quite a mess.”

Firefighters are taking industrial action in protest against the NSW government’s proposed cuts to WorkCover.

The strike is scheduled to end at 6pm (AEST) on Thursday.
