A young father shot dead at his home after serving time in prison was likely killed by a lone assailant in Sydney’s west, police say.
The 25-year-old was gunned down about 1.45am (AEDT) on Saturday at his home in Biara Street, Chester Hill.
Superintendent Dave Eardley said the man, who had recently been released from prison, was killed by a single gunshot to the chest.
He said it was unlikely more than one gunman was involved.
“We have no evidence to lead us in that direction at this stage,” he told reporters on Friday.
The shooting looked well planned and could be linked to the victim recently being let out of prison, he added.
“This is not a random incident, the 25-year-old male person is known to police,” Supt Eardley said.
“He has recently been released from jail after a custodial sentence.
“That is certainly one of the lines of the inquiry that the strike force will follow, just examining his activities since has been released from jail.”
Supt Eardley said a number of family members, including the man’s young children, were at home at the time of the shooting, which took place in one of the rooms of the house.
But he would not be drawn on whether the assailant broke in through a bedroom window.
“It’s an absolute tragedy, the fact that we now have children without a father, and you have a family without a brother and a son,” Supt Eardley said.
CPR was administered at the scene but the 25-year-old died in the house.
Residents in Biara Street were told to stay indoors while police investigated.
The attack is the latest in a string of shootings across Sydney’s west over the past months.
The number of shootings at premises in western Sydney increased from 73 last year to 88 at the start of December this year, according to the Bureau of Crime Statistics and Research.
