Ditching sugar-laden drinks and switching to either slim-line versions or water can help dieters shed up to 5 per cent of their body weight in just six months.

Researchers yesterday claimed that the simple substitution by those trying to lose weight will see them shift a minimum of 5lb.

Their study, due to appear in the American Journal of Clinical Nutrition, compared weight loss for 318 overweight or obese people.

The study found that switching from full-fat fizzy drinks to their diet equivalents can help weight loss - but only if consumers don't make up for the lost calories some other way, by drinking more for example

Volunteers were divided into three groups – one group switched from calorie-laden beverages to diet soft drinks, the next switched to water, while the third group did not change their drinks and just received general information about healthy choices that could lead to weight loss.

The groups were monitored across six months and while all three experienced small reductions in weight and waist circumference, the group who switched to calorie-free beverages were twice as likely to lose five percent or more of their body weight than those who didn’t change their drinks.

Professor Deborah Tate, study author at the University of North Carolina, said: ‘Substituting non-caloric beverages – whether it’s water, diet soft drinks or something else – can be a clear and simple change for people who want to lose or maintain weight.

Fitness first: The study found that switching to diet beverages is an easy lifestyle change for many to make but exercise is still needed for significant weight-loss

‘If this were done on a large scale, it could significantly reduce the increasing public health problem of obesity.’

Professor Tate and colleagues undertook the study to provide scientific evidence of whether eliminating calories from beverages is an effective weight loss tool that health-care providers and nutritional experts could recommend.

But the study found that switching to water is still the best option as it also reduced blood sugar levels

The study, entitled Choosing Healthy Options Consciously Everyday (CHOICE), is the first controlled trial testing the effectiveness of diet beverages as the primary weight loss strategy in overweight adults.

Professor Tate added: ‘It does help. We learned that both water and diet sodas have some benefits, but they may be different.

‘People who really like the sweet flavor or carbonation or caffeine of sodas may be more likely to stick with the change if they are drinking diet sodas as opposed to water only.

‘But drinking water was associated with some other important health improvements like reduced blood sugar.’

Professor
Tate said lower blood sugar levels were important because they are
associated with clinical improvements in risk factors for
obesity-related chronic diseases.

The
study also noted that getting people to change just one aspect of their
diets, such as drink beverages, was a manageable goal and easily
sustainable lifestyle change in comparison to strict exercise regimes.

Professor Tate continued: ‘Substituting specific foods or beverages that provide a substantial portion of daily calories may be a useful strategy for modest weight loss or weight gain prevention.

‘Beverages may be ideal targets, but keep in mind, the strategy will only work if the person doesn’t make up for the lost calories some other way.’

It will also kill you quicker than ordinary pop! Diet drinks have a ” very toxic” mix of chemicals to get the diet affect! Don’t touch them, if you are interested to stay free of diabetes, heart, liver and kidney desease! The world obesity epedemic is fueled by these fizzy pops and fast food!…

Aspartame will break in formaldehyd over-saturating the body with this natural chemical the body produces by its own and so it will damage the liver, Now, all depends how much you use and how you use it. The human tongue is the one that gives order to the body to produce insuline by tasting sweet. Aspartame will result in release of Insulin. Insulin is the transport train of all nutrition in the body. It’s main purpose is to break down sugar in glucose and bring it to muscles to be used as fast energy supply. In case that no sugar is provided, it’s preference is fat, So, insuline brings fat to fat cells in the body, much faster than it brings sugar, since fat does not need any processing. Eat and drink light together will result in excessive fattening of the body and thus is more dangerous for health than a normal sweet drink. So, use light the intelligent way and drink it between meals and with exercise, then insuline will break down your fat and transforms it sugar. sliming u down

But they taste revolting!

I have a better headline “drink water, you will probably lose more than 5% in 6 months without the disgusting ingredients rotting your insides”

Maybe if the aspartame does not kill you

Aspartame, breaks down into formaldehyde – so you can embalm your self while your alive!
– The judge, Lund, 15/2/2012 1:31————————– No need to. The human body produces formaldehyde NATURALLY. We are all DOOMED!!

And then reap all the benefits of too much aspartame!!! Shocking substitute. Drink water! —————————Cue chemophobes and new-age alchemists! Even filtered water contains traces of “deadly” arsenic, benzene, polonium-210, etc.; “lethal” bacteria like e-Coli, etc.; “fatal” algae like cyanobacteria, etc. We are all DOOMED!!!

Who paid for this article, the makers of Aspartamine? It is a daily source of humour to watch obese folk waddle around with a bucket of lard encrusted foodlike stuff in one hand and a diet soda in the other.

Totally irresponsible. Diet soda, just like regular soda are full of carcinogenic chemicals (as Amy, New Zealand wisely pointed out). Drinking piles of sugar is awful but so is continuing to fill one’s stomach with carbonation which screws around with one’s sense of being full and a load of other bad side effects. This isn’t good reporting, just poorly researched and ignoring loads of information to the contrary easily available from literally thousands of sources. Bad form, DM.
