Swiss vote against taking more holiday

Hand-Ulrich Bigler, director of the Swiss Union of Arts and Crafts, which
represents 300,000 companies, said “in rejecting the initiative,
citizens have kept a sense of reality”.

“Employers want to remain flexible in determining the amount of vacation,”
he added. “Solutions must be sought through collective labour
agreements; not through superfluous laws.”

Martin Flugel, president of Travail Suisse, said he was disappointed with the
result but “proud to have raised the issue of overwork”. But
Chantal Hayoz, general secretary of the union Syna, said the government had
scared people into voting “no” by raising the spectre of
unemployment.
