Scientists of the Federal Polytechnic School of Lausanne in Switzerland have developed a new robot which can be controlled by brainwaves of a partially paralyzed person.

During a demonstration professor Jose Millan showed how a patient in a hospital in the southern town of Sion could use the technology to control the robot in their lab 100 kilometers away.

The paralyzed man wore an electrode-fitted cap which detects and sends the brain’s electrical signals to a laptop in his room.

When the semi paraplegic volunteer Mark-Andre Duc imagined lifting his paralyzed fingers the computer decoded the signals and sent it through web to a remote laptop which commanded the robot move around in the Lausanne lab.

The new system can significantly help paraplegic patients to move a wheelchair, control devices and even recover lost senses and walk or work with mind controlled limbs.

Millan’s team who begun their human study over a decade ago, still have to overcome some limitations like brain signal interference caused by pain or patient’s concentration distractions.

While the human brain can perfectly perform several tasks at the same time, a paralyzed person would have to focus the entire time they are directing the device, Millan explained. “Sooner or later your attention will drop and this will degrade the signal.”

To ward off the problem, researchers programmed the brain signal decoding computer to continue sending the same signal to the robot even when the patient’s mind was distracted from controlling the movements.

“Once the movement has begun, the brain can relax, otherwise the person would soon be exhausted,” Millan added.
