Swinging voters put bid team on edge

A BLOC of 21 `swinging’ countries is keeping the 2018 Commonwealth Games announcement on a knife’s edge, with Gold Coast delegates launching a last-minute lobbying campaign to secure the event.

The Coast bid team has locked in 25 votes from the 71 member countries, but Sri Lanka has also confirmed 25, leaving a group of 21 undecided nations holding the ultimate power.

Lobbying from the bid team as well as Premier Anna Bligh has reached fever pitch in St Kitts and Nevis, where the final announcement will be made at 8am tomorrow morning (Gold Coast time).

Gold Coast bid boss Mark Stockwell last night revealed there would be one-on-one discussions with delegates the bid team believed it needed to win over.

It is understood several countries, including England, are considering supporting Hambantota.

Thirteen of the city’s 25 votes are coming from the Oceania delegation, which last month confirmed it would vote as a bloc and support the Gold Coast’s bid.

It is understood Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland have also indicated their support for the Coast but the remaining seven nations of the European delegation, including England, remain undecided.

Of the 15 Caribbean nations, only the vote of Anguilla is certain after representative Cardigan Connor revealed his support during a visit in September.

It is understood the six votes from the Americas, which includes Canada, have also been locked away, while there are strong signs Singapore will support us.

The Gold Coast will also receive votes from some, but not all, of the African delegates, with Malawi the only certainty.
