nsnbc : Swedish prosecutors have launched a criminal investigation against the German automaker Volkswagen over the recent emission scandal.
The preliminary charges focus primarily on fraud and the use of false or falsified documents, said Sewdish anti-corruption prosecutor Alf Johansson on Tuesday.
Volkswagen AG could face corporate fines if found guilty in a court of law. In September 2015 Volkswagen acknowledged that it used software that provided false or falsified results on emission tests in the United States.
The software involved diesel powered vehicles as well as SUVs sold since the 2009 models were sold to the market.
The software and the scandal also involves the Volkswagen Group brands Audi and Porsche. The emission scandal involves about 11 million vehicles worldwide. Volkswagen’s Swedish branch announced that it would cooperate fully with the Swedish prosecutors’ investigation.
Volkswagen has set aside some €6.5 billion to cover the costs of the scandal in the USA alone.
Ironically, the scandal began when the European wing of the US NGO International Council on Clean Transportation (ICCT) set out to prove modern diesels were genuinely clean and would therefore be able to make a significant contribution to improving both CO2 emissions and air quality.
