nsnbc : Both Swedish Prime Minister Stefan Löfven and Foreign Minister Margot Wallström pointed out that Palestinian’s current resistance in the occupied West Bank and Jerusalem is not terrorism and accused Israel of using excessive force.
Israeli military and police in occupied East Jerusalem and throughout the occupied West Bank have increasingly come under pressure from especially young Palestinians who are resisting against the decades-long occupation of Palestine and a post-Oslo Accords “Peace Process” without peace and an end to the occupation.
Among the forms of reported resistance are stone throwing and several isolated knife attacks. Israel has recently adopted a shoot to kill stone throwers policy. The exact number of alleged knife attacks is according to several independent observers exaggerated.
On Monday, Swedish Prime Minister Stefan Löfven said that he does not consider these attacks carried out by individuals as terrorism as they are not organized as such. Löfven said:
“I was referring to the fact that it is not clear whether these knife attacks have been organized by some organization designated as terrorist organization.”
Löfven added, were these attacks organized by a terrorist organization it would, of course be terrorism. Löfven told the Swedish press that there is a difference between attacks carried out by individuals who face heavily armed Israeli troops and police and organized terrorism.
Last week Swedish Prime Minister Stefan Löfven and Foreign Minister Margot Wallström issued a joint statement, saying: “The situation in the Middle East is difficult enough without having to be encumbered by misunderstandings about anybody’s intentions”.
Margot Wallström had previously attributed much of the instability in the Middle East to what she described as “the desperate situation of Palestinians under Israeli occupation”.
The Swedish government accuses Israel of disporportionate use of force and of protracting the illegal occupation of Palestinian territories. While mass media are widely reporting on individual knife attacks on Israelis, it is largely omitted by most State and corporate media that the Israeli crack-down against Palestinians has cost over 100 Palestinian lives over the past month alone.
Sweden is on the forefront of European States that call for an end to Israel’s occupation of Palestinian territories. Earlier this month the Israeli cabinet responded to the recently adopted European Union directive that demands that goods from occupied Arab territories are labeled as such by suspending the Israeli – EU cooperation on the Israeli – Palestinian peace process. The Cabinet of PM Benjamin Netanyahu singled Sweden out as one among several other countries against whom Israel would implement “additional measures”.
