Suspected bomb at bikie massacre site

Police are examining a suspected bomb found in a western Sydney hotel infamous for the Milperra bikie massacre.

The suspicious device was discovered at the Mill Hotel, in Beaconsfield Street, Milperra, just before 7.30am on Wednesday.

The hotel, previously known as the Viking Tavern, was where seven people died in a shootout between rival bikie gangs the Comancheros and the Bandidos in 1984.

Detective Superintendent Dave Eardley from Bankstown police said officers had taken possession of the device.

“Just prior to 7.30 police were notified of a package at a licensed premises, a hotel, in Beaconsfield Street,” he told reporters.

“Police responded and located the package at the front door of the premises and this package appeared to have a number of wires that protruded from it.”

It was not known who planted the device, he said.

“It’s certainly been designed at the very least to disrupt the business activity of the premises, but it’s also disrupted the industrial area that surrounds these premises,” he said.

The device was taken for forensic examination, a police spokeswoman said.

Businesses next to the Mill Hotel were evacuated as a precaution but some people were able to return from about 3pm (AEST), she said.

A staff member from the hotel told AAP the pub would open again for business on Thursday.
